DPVR continues its focus on cutting edge VR Headset technology with the launch of the first 5G Edge Cloud Powered all-in-one portable VR Headset. November 2017 the 5th China Mobile Global Partners Conference was held in PWTC Expo (Poly World Trade Center Expo) in Guangzhou. China Mobile and nearly 200 well-known enterprises exhibited their achievements in innovation, and organized more than 10 symposiums on mobile Internet, Intelligent IoT (Internet of Things), smart governments & enterprises, smart homes and 5G respectively.

DPVR, as a partner of the China Mobile 5G Innovation Center that specializes in developing VR HMDs (head-mounted displays), showcased the up-to-date applications of the “edge cloud VR” technology at this conference. One wearing a 5G edge cloud powered all-in-one VR headset by DPVR delivers a smooth experience for PC VR gaming. Iron Soul developed by Wuhan FireGame was available at the expo for testing.

Li Ke, an expert of VR projects in China Mobile Research Institute, remarked that China Mobile Research Institute worked in conjunction with DPVR and launched an edge-computing-based custom all-in-one VR headset, which would promote the popularization of all-in-one VR headsets, as hardware costs had been significantly reduced and user experiences had been optimized by adopting the 5G Edge network to aid VR rendering and computing speeds.

The system adopts cutting-edge GPU virtualization technology, which features support for concurrent multi-user VR services with a single server; with the introduction of MEC (mobile-edge computing) architecture, VR rendering is lowered to the communication edge network, thereby enhancing image quality while reducing network latency.

In addition, in light of the characteristics of network rendering, the research & development team of DPVR has applied special optimization on the all-in-one headset. The algorithm of ATP (asynchronous time warp) and the technology of front buffer rendering have been adopted to send the contents for network transmission to the screen with the minimum motion-to-photon latency. The technology can avoid the possible influence of latency and bandwidth, and alleviate virtual reality sickness.

According to the Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies published by Gartner in 2017, there will be growth of the application of VR in the fields of games, videos, and live broadcasts in the coming years. Edge cloud VR can enable faster access of content, lower prices, and wider popularization of VR. Edge cloud VR will set the trend of the future VR industry.
